Preserving Stuff from the Web

We can absolutely live without the garbage that is social media, Big Tech woke policies and many other aspects of the internet. But we do glean a great deal of value from instructional YouTube videos, the wisdom in technical forums and the wealth of PDF manuals and e-books that are readily available. Lots of important knowledge that becomes even more valuable when you are busy learning new skills, trying to stretch budgets and wanting to understand how things work.

There are, however, many reasons why we should not rely on the internet always being there. A Russian or Chinese cyber attack could take it down for extended periods of time. The internet runs on electricity, so good luck with that if the grid is down, even if you have your own generator. The police state might limit access by individuals or groups along with censorship of anything deemed "dangerous". And your future social credit score might no longer qualify you for a subscription with a service provider.

We, therefore, urge everyone to begin building their own library of downloaded material, backed up to an external hard drive stored separately in a secure place. All of the stuff that would be useful to have in an extended emergency. We have dozens and dozens of YouTube videos saved on topics such as completing 80% ARs and pistols, gunsmithing, reloading, military and police tactics, shooting skills, first aid, construction, survival skills, food preservation, HAM radio and vehicle repair. We have added to this as many military manuals as we could find (there are 100s), free e-books on practical subjects, and scanned collections of magazines such as Soldier of Fortune and Guns. The sum is very much greater than the parts.

Another thing we have found very useful is being able to remove the Digital Rights protection from our own e-books we have purchased so we could convert them into PDFs, print them and retain a hard copy (for personal use only, of course). We sleep more soundly at night knowing that if the e-book is recalled or censored, or if the e-reader is malfunctions, we still have a paper copy on which to rely.

To achieve all of this, we simply need to point you in the direction of a few pieces of easy to use software. While there are free versions of some of it, we encourage you to upgrade to the paid versions to unlock all the features and remove restrictions on the number downloads or conversions you can do at any one time. All of the software is intuitive and easy to use plus they are backed up by good customer support and guides to overcome any issues that might arise.

Video Downloading

4K Downloader   https://www.4kdownload.com/products/videodownloader/8

FreeMake   https://www.freemake.com/free_video_downloader2/

We have found that it is worth having at least two programs as sometimes a video which will not download with one can be grabbed with the other.

Converting E-books in to PDFs

Epubor Ultimate    https://www.epubor.com/ultimate.html

Note: if you buy your e-books through Kindle, the latest version of the reader app downloads copies that cannot be converted to PDFs. But it is trivial to uninstall the latest app and reinstall an earlier version: there are easy to follow instructions on epubor's website.

Plenty of free, scanned publication collections can be found on the Web. Here's just a few, for instance:

Finally, should you be so inclined, here is also a link to download the entirety of Wikipedia (while the political bias is obvious in many entries, much of the information is solid and having off line access to it could be valuable):

Here's a guide to putting this off line Wikipedia on to a hardened, disaster proof Raspberry Pi, for those who want to go down a rabbit hole:
